United manager, Louis Van Gaal, is looking to German defensive duo Mats Hummels and Benedikt Howedes to bolster United’s defence during the window.

Van Gaal has turned his attention to the Germans, as a deal for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, could not be completed.

The defenders were targets for United last transfer window, and since then United’s defence has come under criticism for a number of poor performances. The Germans are both trying to find a way out of their respective clubs, and United are ready to pounce on the opportunity and bring the players to Manchester.

Arsenal are also reportedly keen to sign the centre backs,  but it is believed the duo would prefer a move to United.

Hummels is valued at £45m by Dortmund, whilst Howedes would be available for a more modest £15m.

This deal seems realistic for United as poor defensive performances have often cost the club dearly. Both defenders are wanting to move abroad and seem tempted by a move to Manchester, a top side in the race for the title.
