Costa Rica in their first World Cup knockout match ever against Greece have celebrated after a penalty shoot-out lottery AET (Pen 5-4) and so secured their quarterfinals match with Netherlands. Gekas was the one who missed a penalty for Greece !

Bryan Ruiz scored an opener for Costa Rica in the 52th minute, and the same score was until the 91st minute and injury time when Greece managed to score against the 10-man Central American side as in the 66th minute Duarte picked his second yellow card. Scorer for the Greeks was Sokratis Papastathopoulos. Since the extra time ended with the same 1-1, a penalty shootout decided a winner who will play against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.
