"England vs Germany"

One of the oldest rivalries in world football takes center stage tonight in this high-profile international friendly at Wembley Stadium. England will no doubt want to bounce back after a disappointing performance against South American opponents Chile on Friday night. However you can’t criticize Roy Hodgson too much for giving an opportunity to players to make a claim for a seat on the plane to Brazil next year. Unfortunately it was a sluggish and sloppy performance from England, albeit it was not our strongest XI. But while a defeat against Chile while fielding a weaker side can be easily forgotten, a defeat in the same manner against Germany with a team close to our strongest XI can not.

England prepare to face Germany

England trained on Monday ahead of hosting old rivals Germany in a friendly at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday.

Germany head into the game with a lot to prove however, as they enter the World Cup in Brazil next year as one of the favourites, something which England are not. Roy Hodgson believes it is down to the England players to prove that they are capable of competing with such teams next year. It will certainly make for an interesting encounter between the two nations, with German coach Joachim Low resting several of his key stars to give some of the fringe players a chance to stake a claim for a spot to Brazil. It will be a very different German team to the one which will feature in Brazil, so it is even more important England put in a decent performance with one of their strongest line-ups available.

One of the players who did stand out for England on Friday night was Southampton’s Adam Lallana, who retains his place in Hodgson’s starting line-up.Roy Hodgson has otherwise made 9 changes to his team, with Rooney the other player to keep his spot.

Joe Hart has come in for much criticism this season, which has seen him lose his number one spot at Manchester City, however after being replaced by Frazer Forster on Friday, Hart returns to the England line-up in an attempt to win back his place. Elsewhere Steven Gerrard is set to return after missing the game against Chile in what will be his 108th cap for country. Daniel Sturridge comes back into the side, as does Ashley Cole who replaces Leighton Baines.
