Everton 3-1 Wigan 17/09/2011 (Premier League)
Wigan were defeated as Apostolos Velios and Royston Drenthe struck late to earn Everton a 3-1 win at Goodison Park. Following an opening half-hour of dominance from the home team, Wigan took the lead against the run of play through Franco di Santo, whose long-range shot deflected in off Tony Hibbert.
However, the visitors’ advantage lasted only a minute before Phil Jagielka tapped in from close range after Tim Cahill’s header hit a post. Wigan looked to have quelled the home threat until Velios’ 88th-minute header from Hibbert’s cross, and Drenthe completed the scoring in injury time.
