In the biggest Spanish derby, the El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona which was played on Sunday’s night, the Catalans side scored three to seal an important win and to restore the leading position at La liga top.

Messi drew a blank against Juventus in the Champions League in midweek, but against Real Madrid scored two goals with one being late dramatic win, Messi reached another landmark figure in a career littered with records. A goal for the win was Messi’s 500th goal and with it, Messi surpassed the Los Blancos legend Alfredo di Stefano who scored 14 goals in El Clasico games.

The 29-year-old went on to net a late second at the Bernabeu, helping Barca to snatch a dramatic 3-2 victory and take him to 500 competitive efforts for Barca in all competitions.

The first of those goals came back in 2007, with a big hat-trick at the age of just 19 offering an early indication of what should come from Lionel Messi.
