Wayne Rooney scored his second hat-trick in as many games for Manchester United as the champions maintained their perfect start to the season with a 5-0 win at Bolton

With Premier League rivals Manchester City going top after a 3-0 win at Wigan, the champions responded emphatically in the late kick-off, bursting out of the blocks to claim an early lead courtesy of Javier Hernandez, who slid in to meet Nani’s low cross in the opening five minutes.
Rooney doubled United’s lead after poking the ball home from Phil Jones’ cross, and the pair were involved in United’s third just five minutes later, as Jussi Jaaskelainen denied Jones his first United goal after a superb solo run, but the ball trickled to Rooney, who slotted home from six yards out.
Hernandez made it four after Bolton failed to clear after dispossessing Nani, and Rooney completed his hat-trick on 68 minutes, powering in a first-time strike from Nani’s pass after Ryan Giggs had found the Portuguese on the edge of the area.
